Waterfrom Design and style were encouraged to produce a tranquil, harmonious setting for the TEA Community Centre in Xiamen, China. Things of landscape and mother nature such as daylight, airy open space and water were being viewed as both architectural attributes and calming characteristics all through the design and style. Neighborhood was top of mind, with the designers creating a room for locals to collect and relax.

“Tea is the tradition and essence of the previous Xiamen lifestyle. It is a ritual and existence to boil water and brew tea for buddies. It is not about the amount of tea consuming tea is a gesture of releasing and calming our intellect,” clarifies the style and design team.

The building is set throughout two stages, just one of which is beneath the floor and concealed beneath a pool of water. A spherical inner courtyard spans across equally floors, with a tree planted at its centre referencing conventional collecting spots in Chinese villages. 50 percent of the courtyard is enclosed by glass, letting natural light to penetrate the underneath-ground ground and give views of the tree.

The higher than-ground glass tea pavilion is permeated with the sound of flowing drinking water from the surrounding pool, a simulated lakeside working experience. An opening in the floor characteristics a dimly lit slender staircase that sales opportunities to the ground underneath, with the designers conceiving the entrance as an option for website visitors to descend into a state of leisure. The tree casts shadows throughout the walls, whilst the ‘lake’ above is obvious in excess of the roof. The multipurpose degree options eating tables, a serving counter and lounge house with bookshelves and a number of seating possibilities. There is also a lecture house and exhibition place for rotating events held in the local community centre.

The designers trapped to a negligible palette of organic components in serene, soft shades in the course of the interior. Keeping away from everything abnormal, Waterfrom constructed an intuitive, flowing house described by its simplicity. Limestone and sandstone fixtures are complemented by furnishings built from fir timber, embellished by things these kinds of as copper, handmade pottery and rattan.
